Workout #4-26: One-on-One Cutthroat Live
One-on-one cutthroat allows players to put their newly acquired offensive skills to the test. They should be creative and find a rhythm and tempo that works best for them. Cutthroat can be played from anywhere on the floor. The defense can either roll the ball out to the offense or a coach can make a pass to the offensive player using various types of cuts to get open. This drill is very competitive, so it is important to keep score. The first player to 21 points wins. However, as soon as the offense gets to three points, it’s make it/take it for him. This rule forces both the offense and defense to play hard because players want to be on offense the whole time to work on their moves.
Rules for the offense:
• They must catch with a rip.
• They must have a dominant pivot foot.
• They must score off a live-ball move or combination live-ball move.
• They must have a maximum of three dribbles.
• If any of these rules are not followed, the offense loses their turn.
Rules for the defense:
• If they foul, they lose their turn.
• If they get a stop, they go to offense.
Note: One-on-one cutthroat is the best way to improve and develop live-ball moves in a competitive situation. Players should always practice the things they have learned in competitive situations. Remind players that it’s okay if moves don’t work at first, and they should keep working on them.
